Signs of the Times Related to: Our Climate

What is happening with our climate? When we look at the current news, we are inundated with articles on drastic events happening in our climate. We see news reports from all over the globe about natural catastrophes such as: blizzards, severe winter storms in areas that are normally mild and even semi-tropic, floods & landslides in various places, and droughts in areas that usually have good rainfall in that particular season. It is almost like the earth has tilted 90% off center. What is causing this unnatural phenomena? And why are these things happening in such abundance and affecting the entire planet at the same time? Let's look at a small sample of news articles from just the last three weeks:
- Record Falls With Snow in Washington, DC - 2/10/2010
- 49 states dusted with snow; Hawaii's the holdout - 2/13/2010
- State of the Climate - Global Hazards - February 2010 - 2/17/2010
- Flood chaos hits Portuguese island of Madeira - 2/20/2010
- Fierce storms across Europe kill 51 - 2/28/2010
- Uganda landslide leaves 80 dead, 400 missing - 3/3/2010
- And, as a result, U.N. Climate Chief Resigns - 3/3/2010
It is evident from the above articles that 2010 is starting off with a bang! The climate is suffering some of the worst record-breaking conditions across the globe. This is all just within the first 2 months of the year! This writer has dubbed this year as "2010 The Year of Destiny!" in his blogs and status updates on Twitter.com. And here we are only looking at 1 aspect of the events of the "Signs of the Times"! But what does the the phrase "Signs of the Times" mean?
In the bible, the Old Testament prophets, Jesus and His disciples delivered a group of prophesies that have relevance only for the final days of this world's system. They refer to it as "the time of the end", "the last days", "the end of the age", "the second coming of Christ" and "the signs of the times". These prophetic messages were not given to the generation that existed during the prophet's life time. They were not even future prophecies dealing with events that would occur in the future but before the end. But they are categorized as specific prophetic events that would single the very last days of this world's self government and the establishing of a new government under the rule of the Jewish Messiah, and rightful heir to the throne of David: Jesus Christ! Jesus Himself also gave us specifics about the last days. He said their would be signs involving all areas of life at the time of the last generation.
Over the next few weeks we will be looking at the signs of the times as they relate to the following categories: Climate (signs in the physical world: weather, earthquakes, etc.), Heavens (signs in the sky: solar system and universe, etc.), Society (signs in people: government & societal sins; homosexuality, pride, ungodliness, etc.) and the Church (signs in Christians: backsliding, self-seeking, unholiness, powerlessness). Today its signs involving the climate.
Signs in the Climate There are many prophecies in the bible dealing with the last days of this world system. In this blog, we will look at some of them, specifically concentrating on the ones that relate to the physical environment in which we live. We will refer to them as signs dealing with the climate for simplicity's sake. Some of the verses have numerous categories listed in a single verse of scriptural reference, but we will be keying on the parts that deal with our subject matter only. Future blogs in the series will reuse and address the other categories from the same and additional biblical references.
Let's begin with our first biblical prophesy dealing with the climate in the last days:
"For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows." (Mathew 24:7-8)
Here Jesus is giving us a small glimpse into the climate of the last days. at this point, Jesus is nearing the end of His ministry. He just left the temple of David where He was in a battle with the religious leaders of His day (See Mathew 23). He warned them that they would not see Him again till they would acknowledge Him as their Messiah at His second coming. He needed some time to unwind from this heated debate, so He was sitting on the Mount of Olives just outside of the temple area. His disciples were awestruck at His forceful and judgemental words to the leaders as one having authority! His disciples, while scared a little by this side of Jesus they had not witnessed often, were too intrigued not to ask Him about His subject matter on His second coming. They asked Him: "the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? (verse. 3)". Jesus then begins to tell them about the signs of the last days and His return. He states that there would be "famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places" and that these signs would be "the beginning of sorrows". Here Jesus mentions that we would have hunger, disease (includes: flues and viruses) and earthquakes running rampant. Jesus warned them, but more importantly, US to know that things were gonna get worse and worse in the last days, culminating with His return. He goes on to inform them that the sequence of events would quickly deteriorate to the coming of the Antichrist and the wrath of God being poured out on all the world. And then He would come back, splitting the time in two as He literally stops the flow of the entire world's business as usual activities. He would immediately, and without any resistance, take full control of planet earth!
Next we will look at a passage from Luke's account of the same conversation that Jesus was having in the Mathew 24 account: "And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed" (Luke 17:26-30)
Jesus goes on to say that the last days would be like the days of Noah and Lot in God's previous judgements. With Noah, it was a worldwide flood caused by torrential rain over an extended period of time. With Lot, it was the destruction of 2 major cites via "fire and brimstone" falling from the sky. While nowhere in the bible is there a reference to our modern day word for volcano, the message is pretty clear here. Jesus says these things would happen in the end time just like they did back then. This includes major floods, with the landslides they cause and volcanic eruptions. While this writer does recognise that the main subject here is the condition of the people in these past events, it is also fitting to see the instruments that God used to bring the judgment. When Jesus said it would be like those events, He did not over look this fact. He was talking to us in our day and time and knew we could put 2 and 2 together!

In Conclusion It is obvious from these biblical prophecies and a view of our life here on planet earth today that time is running out on this world system! This fact will be much more obvious as we look at the other categories of end time signs in our future blogs about the Signs of the Times! Summary
We are being
warned! God is showing us what His purpose for this
world entails. As we get closer and closer to the end,
the world has become more and more sinful! And
unfortunately, this condition will worsen till He
returns and redeems us from ourselves. Don't let sin,
self or Satan who has invaded our planet separate you
from the free gift of salvation that Jesus extends to
you in His invitation to be born-again:
For God so loved the world that He gave His only
begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not
perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send
His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that
the world through Him might be saved. “He who believes
in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe
is condemned already, because he has not believed in
the name of the only begotten Son of God. (John 3:16-18)
